Reduce Food Loss and Waste Act
In October 2023, U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced the Reduce Food Loss and Waste Act which aims to decrease food waste in the U.S. by creating a Food Loss and Waste Certification to identify businesses that are making efforts to reduce food waste. This transparency would enable consumers to consider these practices while making purchases and encourage businesses to adopt more sustainable food management practices. The label would be like ENERGY STAR*, which indicates to consumers which products are energy efficient.
The bill would:
- Authorize the creation of a Food Loss and Waste Certification.
- Allow the USDA to promulgate criteria for the certification, establish a verification process, and design an easily identifiable label to indicate which products have a Food Loss and Waste Certification.
- Authorize certified businesses to display the certification on buildings, products, and websites.
